De Zerbi opens up on Porro's honesty amid fitness and transfer talk
Pedro Porro is the man of the moment at Tottenham, with his fitness, his future and his possible replacement all making headlines in the same breath. The thread tying it together is De Zerbi's comments on the Spaniard being candid about not being ready to start against Crystal Palace.
The Evening Standard reports that Roberto De Zerbi revealed he appreciated Porro's honesty after the full-back told him he did not feel ready to start against Palace, with the piece noting he had only recently returned from a spell out (Evening Standard). TottenhamHotspur.com echoes this from the club's own channels, with De Zerbi giving an update on when both Pedro and Destiny will be ready to start matches again, suggesting the coaching staff are being careful not to rush either man back into the side (TottenhamHotspur.com).
Away from the fitness picture, Spurs Web points to Porro's ongoing transfer links with Barcelona, saying his latest statement on the matter may leave Spurs supporters uneasy, even if the club have apparently received some reassuring news out of Barcelona on that front (Spurs Web). It is a reminder that speculation over his long-term future continues to swirl alongside the more immediate question of his match fitness.
Spurs Web also reports that Tottenham may have identified a possible back-up for Porro's position, naming a versatile Juventus defender valued around £34million, though the same report notes Arsenal are also keen, meaning any move would not be straightforward (Spurs Web).
Put together, the picture from these outlets is of a club managing Porro carefully in the short term while keeping an eye on both his long-term future and squad depth in that area. For Spurs fans, the honest conversation with De Zerbi will be seen as a positive sign of trust between player and head coach, even as the Barcelona talk rumbles on in the background. With Tottenham on the road to Leeds this weekend, how quickly Porro is eased back into contention could be worth watching.
